Service group: Managed IT

Business Wi-Fi planned from a survey, not from where the outlet happened to be

Access points placed for your floor plan and walls, secure staff authentication, guest networks kept apart from your systems, and roaming that holds a Teams call from the boardroom to the warehouse door.

A network engineer inspecting orderly structured cabling and switches in a modest professional network rack.

At a glance

Service
Design, configuration and ongoing management of business wireless networks by Podium Catchers
Best suited to
Canadian offices, clinics, retail spaces and light industrial sites with roughly 5 to 200 staff and recurring wireless complaints or a planned move
Core inclusions
Wireless site survey, access point placement plan, SSID and security design, guest isolation, roaming configuration and firmware management (as scoped)
Security approach
WPA3 where devices support it, WPA2/WPA3 transition where they don’t, separate VLANs for staff, guest and IoT devices, and no shared staff passwords where enterprise authentication is practical
Not included by default
Access point hardware, cabling, mounting, building-to-building links and after-hours installation unless written into the proposal
Pricing basis
Surveys and deployments quoted per site as projects; ongoing management per access point or site per month; published figures are proposals pending approval
How to start

What business Wi-Fi service includes

Wireless is now the primary network for most staff. Laptops, phones, tablets, handheld scanners and conference room displays all depend on it, yet many offices still run a consumer router or a few access points installed wherever a cable was available. The result is dead zones, dropped video calls, and a guest password printed on the wall that also reaches the file server.

Our business Wi-Fi service begins with a site survey to understand your walls, ceilings, interference sources and where people actually work. From that we produce an access point placement and channel plan, design separate wireless networks for staff, guests and devices, configure secure authentication and roaming, and then manage the system: firmware, capacity, changes and troubleshooting.

Wi-Fi is one part of your wider network. It plugs into switches and a firewall that we can also manage, but the survey, radio design and wireless security work described here are specific to the wireless layer.

Wi-Fi complaints we are asked to solve

  • Dead zones and weak corners

Meeting rooms, back offices or the shop floor where signal drops because access points were placed for convenience rather than coverage.

  • Calls that drop when people move

Devices cling to a distant access point instead of roaming to a nearer one, so voice and video calls freeze while walking between rooms.

  • Guests on the business network

Visitors, contractors and personal phones share the same network as computers and printers, with one password that has never changed.

  • Slow at busy times

Wi-Fi is fine at 7 a.m. and unusable at 10, because channels overlap, older devices drag the network down or there are too few access points for the headcount.

Key capabilities

  • Wireless site surveys

Predictive surveys from your floor plan and on-site validation where needed, measuring signal strength, noise and interference from neighbouring networks.

  • Access point placement and channel planning

A placement map, channel and transmit power plan, and band steering settings sized for the number of people and devices in each area.

  • WPA3 and enterprise authentication

WPA3-Personal or WPA3-Enterprise where supported, with staff authentication tied to Microsoft Entra ID or certificates instead of a shared password where practical.

  • Guest and IoT isolation

Separate SSIDs on their own VLANs with client isolation, bandwidth limits and internet-only access, plus optional captive portal terms for visitors.

  • Roaming optimization

Fast roaming standards such as 802.11r, k and v configured and tested so devices move cleanly between access points during calls.

  • Ongoing wireless management

Firmware updates, controller administration, capacity reviews and troubleshooting when a new device type or office layout changes the picture.

Scope boundaries

Survey, deployment and ongoing management are scoped separately in your proposal.

Typically included

  • Predictive or on-site wireless survey for agreed floors
  • Access point placement, channel and power plan
  • SSID design for staff, guest and IoT networks
  • WPA3 or WPA2/WPA3 security configuration and authentication setup
  • Roaming and band steering configuration and validation
  • Firmware updates and controller administration for managed access points

Requires separate scope or quotation

  • Access point, controller and licence purchases
  • Cable runs, ceiling mounting and lift work by cabling contractors
  • Outdoor and building-to-building wireless bridges
  • Support for personal devices beyond guest network access
  • Wi-Fi in spaces not covered by the survey

Wireless platforms and standards

  • Wi-Fi 6, 6E and Wi-Fi 7 access points where budgets and client devices justify them
  • Ubiquiti UniFi, Cisco Meraki MR, Aruba Instant On and Fortinet FortiAP
  • WPA3-Personal, WPA3-Enterprise and 802.1X with RADIUS
  • 802.11r/k/v fast roaming and band steering
  • Predictive survey software and vendor planning tools
  • Captive portals for guest terms acceptance

Who this is for

  • Offices with hybrid staff

Workplaces where people move between desks, meeting rooms and huddle spaces on laptops and need calls to stay connected.

  • Client-facing spaces

Clinics, showrooms, professional offices and retail locations that offer guest Wi-Fi and must keep it away from business systems.

  • Warehouses and light industrial sites

Facilities using handheld scanners, tablets or label printers across large open areas with racking and metal surfaces.

What changes

  • Coverage where people actually work, backed by survey data
  • Video and voice calls that survive walking between rooms
  • Guests and smart devices kept off the business network
  • Stronger authentication than a shared password on a sticky note
  • Capacity planned for headcount growth
  • One team accountable for wireless problems

From survey to managed Wi-Fi

  1. Requirements and floor plan

We collect floor plans, headcount, device types and problem areas, and agree which spaces need coverage.

  2. Survey and design

We model or measure coverage and produce a placement map, channel plan and SSID security design.

  3. Proposal

You receive a quotation for hardware, installation coordination, configuration and optional ongoing management.

  4. Deployment and validation

Access points are configured and, once mounted, coverage and roaming are tested against the design.

  5. Ongoing management

Firmware, changes and capacity reviews continue under the managed plan.

Ways to buy

All options are confirmed by a written quotation.

  • Wi-Fi survey and design

A one-time project producing a survey report, placement map and security design you can deploy with us or another installer.

  • Survey plus deployment

Design, configuration and validation of a new or replacement wireless system, quoted per site.

  • Managed Wi-Fi

Ongoing wireless management per access point or site, available on its own or within a Managed IT package.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a site survey, or can we just add more access points?

Adding access points without a plan often makes things worse, because overlapping channels interfere with each other. A survey shows where coverage is weak and where interference comes from, so you buy the right number in the right places.

Should we move to WPA3?

Where your devices support it, yes. We usually start in WPA2/WPA3 transition mode so older scanners or printers keep working, and move those devices to a separate network if they cannot be upgraded.

Can guests use our Wi-Fi without reaching our systems?

Yes. Guest networks are placed on their own VLAN with client isolation and internet-only access, so a visitor’s device cannot see your computers, printers or servers.

Can we keep our existing access points?

If they are business-grade and still receive firmware updates, often yes. The survey will show whether they need to move, be supplemented or be replaced.

Do you install the access points physically?

Mounting and cable runs are done by cabling contractors, which we can coordinate. We handle the design, configuration and testing once the hardware is in place.
